When people think of Hollywood, most think of a certain kind of lifestyle. They imagine celebrities at a ritzy party, sipping flutes of super expensive champagne and mingling with other celebrities. They picture celebs lunching with their agents to discuss their latest role over a salad and glass of wine at a Hollywood hot spot. Or, having a few drinks while they wait to hear if their name is called at an awards show.
Celebs aren’t unique in enjoying a drink every now and then — many of us do! Whether you prefer a great cocktail or a glass of wine, many of us enjoy relaxing with a drink after a long week — or finding new favorites. Who doesn’t love discovering a fantastic bottle of wine that becomes your dinner party go-to for years to come?
There are some celebrities who get super into the world of drinks. George Clooney, for example, owned a tequila company for a while. Many celebrities have started their own wine brands, working with vineyards around the world. And, many are simply connoisseurs, with impressive wine cellars to host their friends when they stop by.
However, there are a few celebrities who you won’t see indulging in a glass of wine at an event. For some, it’s because they have a family history of addiction and prefer to steer clear. For others, it’s simply because they haven’t had a desire to drink, and so just never had. Everyone is different!
Here are 15 celebs that you may not have known don’t drink — ever.
Over the years, Blake Lively has earned herself a reputation as a bit of a foodie. And, she’s no stranger to having wine in the kitchen — she’s expressed before that she enjoys the flavor it can add to dishes. However, you’ll never see her sipping a glass of wine while she prepares dinner, simply because it doesn’t appeal to her.
As she spilled to Allure way back in 2012, she’s never had alcohol or any other substances, as “it’s just something that I genuinely don’t have a desire for.” We wonder if that’s the secret to her gorgeous, glowing skin! If she’s having a date night with hubby Ryan Reynolds, she’s going to be sipping sparkling water, not sparkling wine.
The entertainment industry is not an easy place to thrive. There are countless super talented individuals who end up making poor decisions and simply not taking care of themselves. Shania Twain, who has been in the business for decades, knows enough to avoid all that. She takes very good care of herself, eating a healthy diet and staying away from any potentially harmful substances, including alcohol.
Part of the reason may have been her upbringing, where she spent a lot of time playing in bars to earn money for her family. Perhaps seeing her audience sipping beers all evening made her want to stay away from it forever!
Some celebrities avoid alcohol because they just don’t care about it. Others make that decision because they realize the potentially toxic impact it could have on them if they started enjoying it too much. Bradley Cooper falls into the latter camp.
When he was a 20-something actor on the rise, he enjoyed parties and drinking just as much as the next guy. However, he had an epiphany at 29, as he tells GQ, where he realized that “if I continued it [drinking], I was really going to sabotage my whole life.” With his dedication to his career and wanting to succeed, he’s decided to steer clear of it.
Tyra Banks became a model when she was just a teenager, and was exposed to the crazy world of the fashion industry. Many models end up spiralling out of control as they’re suddenly thrust into the strange world, where there are parties all the time and a pressure to stay thin. Tyra, luckily, kept her head on straight — and managed to thrive.
She transitioned from being a model to being a reality television host to a bit of a mogul with her hand in various ventures. Through it all, she’s never toasted her success with champagne because she doesn’t drink. According to Banks, she had a taste of alcohol at 12 and hasn’t touched it since.
Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith basically hasn’t aged for the past two decades. The woman looks incredible! And while some of it is genetics, a large part of it is healthy living. She obviously takes very good care of herself and makes exercise and healthy eating a priority in her life.
She’s also been open about the fact that she has an addictive personality, and can easily get sucked into things. So, as she revealed in a 2010 piece in Us Weekly, she hasn’t had any alcohol since the early 1990s — that’s about 25 years! Her career and life are both thriving, so obviously she made the right decision.
Naomi Campbell is basically fashion royalty at this point. She became a successful model at a time when supermodels were a huge deal, and has been at the top of her game ever since. Back in her younger days, she definitely enjoyed the parties that came along with being a big deal in the fashion world. However, that’s recently changed.
In an interview back in 2013 with Life & Style, Campbell admitted that “I gave up drinking alcohol, not drinking makes me a lot happier.” Sometimes you have to make changes in your life. What worked for one period of your life may not be the right choice for the next chapter — we love that she managed to find that out.
Leona Lewis had a bit of a magical journey to stardom. She ended up winning a season of The X Factor, and used her 15 minutes of fame to get a deal with a record label. As we know from the countless other individuals who have won reality television shows, that notoriety doesn’t last. After a while, if your music isn’t good, you disappear — however, Lewis’ talent earned her fans around the world.
When her debut single “Bleeding Love” shot up the charts and became number one, many would have celebrated with champagne. Not Lewis, though — as she’s admitted, “I don’t drink — I hate the taste of alcohol.”
Many people have the perception that rappers are pretty much always partying. After all, that’s what so many of their songs are about — surely they’re living that life, right? Well, not all rappers.
While Kendrick Lamar probably enjoys spending time with his friends, you won’t find him doing shots at the club. In fact, he doesn’t drink at all. For him, it’s all about his upbringing. He was brought up around many people who struggled with sobriety, so it’s something he’s passionate about maintaining for himself as an adult. Props to him! That’s certainly not easy in an industry where partying is such a big deal.
Kim Kardashian West
Kim Kardashian West always seems to be at some kind of glamorous bash, either in Hollywood or thrown by one of her family members. I mean, the Kardashian parties are legendary — Kris Jenner wouldn’t have it any other way!
However, what you’ll never spot Kim doing is drinking a few too many glasses of wine. And no, it’s not because of anything that happened during her pregnancies. It’s also not because she’s worried about how she’ll appear on camera. Simply put, as Khloe mentioned in an Elle interview, “Kimberly does not drink alcohol whatsoever. Pregnant or not, she’s just never been into it.”
Jennifer Lopez has pretty much been aging backward for the past decade or more. I mean, the woman looks amazing! Obviously, she eats healthy and works out all the time. However, it takes more than that to look the way she does — it takes living a totally healthy lifestyle. In her case, that includes not drinking.
As Lopez confessed to InStyle back in 2003, she avoids smoking and drinking because of the impact it has on your skin. She’s certainly not wrong — alcohol majorly dehydrates you. And, consuming it on a regular basis will definitely not leave you looking your freshest. Perhaps we’ve finally found the secret to her fountain of youth!
Sarah Silverman is completely unafraid to speak her mind, whether in an interview or on stage doing stand-up. She’s bold and brave and has carved her own path in the industry. However, you won’t ever hear her telling jokes about her drunken escapades because, well, she doesn’t have any — she doesn’t drink.
For Silverman, it’s all about the way her body reacts to alcohol. As she told Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet back in 2014, “I don’t drink because it gives me a stomach ache. I try all the time, it looks good and I feel like I would have fun being drunk, but I have a Jewish stomach.”
Jennifer Hudson first captured the world’s attention when she appeared on American Idol. Though she didn’t win, she managed to earn herself a spot in the industry as a singer and actress. While many people find themselves struggling when they are suddenly thrust into the crazy world of Hollywood, Hudson didn’t have to worry about falling into the party girl lifestyle. It turns out, she doesn’t drink at all.
As she spilled to Chelsea Handler, “I’ve never had a drink in my life. I’ve never been interested. Nobody ever believes it.” It just goes to show that everyone has such a different experience.
Gillian Jacobs has earned many fans over the years thanks to her television roles. First, as the often prickly Britta on the sitcom Community, and then in her Netflix show, Love. While she likely celebrated the success of both those shows in her own way, you won’t find her toasting with a glass of champagne. She doesn’t drink, and never has.
That’s right — despite being in the crazy world of Hollywood, Jacobs has never had a sip of alcohol in her life. We’re not sure at what point she decided it wasn’t something she’d ever consume, but she’s steered clear of it all these years.
Zendaya got her start in Hollywood at a young age, which is always challenging. We can’t even count the number of child stars who end up having troubles in adulthood because they’re partying too hard or simply making poor choices. However, Zendaya has managed to steer clear of all that drama — and you won’t find her getting crazy in the club, even though she’s 21 now.
While many people assumed she’d party hard once turning 21, she wrote on her website that “just because I’m now the legal drinking age doesn’t mean I’m going to start throwing ’em back… I don’t want drinking to become a vice. Why try something if you don’t need it?!” We totally commend her for her maturity!
Ellie Goulding has fans around the world who are totally in love with her unique voice. She knows that her livelihood depends on her voice, so she’s obviously going to take good care of it. And, for her, that means avoiding alcohol.
As she told Glamour, “I have noticed already just having a good diet and not smoking or drinking has made my vocal cords so much stronger.” While we don’t think she’s strict enough to avoid even the smallest sip when celebrating, she sticks to her rule. After all, if you’re making mega bucks from your incredible voice, why on earth would you want to potentially jeopardize that, simply for a glass of wine or cocktail?
