Celebrities take very, very good care of their bodies. After all, it’s a big part of their job! For actors, they need to look a certain way on screen. For musicians, they need to be able to keep up with intense choreography on stage. So, while some celebrities may joke about indulging in junk food, the fact is that most of them eat quite healthy pretty much all the time.
Some celebrities are total carnivores and eat a ton of lean protein in addition to their vegetables. They’re constantly chowing down on fish and chicken breast — I mean, anyone who’s seen a typical day of eating for Dwayne Johnson knows how much lean protein it takes to fuel some celeb bodies!
However, there are plenty of celebrities who have opted to go for a plant-based style of eating instead. For some, it’s solely for health reasons — they feel better when they don’t consume meat or dairy or any animal by-products. But for others, it’s more of an ethical thing — they’re huge animal lovers who can’t stomach the idea of consuming any animal products. For many, it’s a combination of the two.
And, to make matters even more interesting, some celebrities are very outspoken about their way of eating, while others keep it on the down low. Either way, if you ever run into certain celebrities at craft services, you’ll see their plates piled high with veggies and plant-based proteins.
If you’ve ever debated switching to a plant-based style of eating, you’d be in good company — here are 15 celebrities you didn’t know are vegan.
The fact that Beyonce has been performing for decades now is totally insane. The woman slays on stage and manages to find the energy to go on crazy tours, even with young kids at home. A large part of that is because she takes care of herself and makes sure to fuel her body — and she’s fuelling it with plant-based meals.
In fact, she’s such a strong believer in her way of eating that she’s even run plant-based food challenges through her social media to try to get fans to join her. She’s obviously busy with her thriving music career, but we wouldn’t be surprised if she invested in a few plant-based companies in the years to come.
Jessica Chastain is one of those celebrities that you likely wouldn’t know was vegan unless you heard her mention it in an interview. However, she’s not just a recent convert to plant-based eating — she’s actually been vegan for over a decade now!
As she told W Magazine, “being vegan was not anything I ever wanted to be. I just really was listening to what my body was telling me.” Simply put, she felt better when she cut out animal products — so she’s stuck with it, year after year.
Chastain has been honest about the fact that being vegan can be challenging — namely when she has to turn down Italian food from her husband’s family. However, she’s stuck to what makes her feel her best.
Here’s a fun fact that many Game of Thrones fans may not know. Whenever you see Peter Dinklage tucking into a piece of meat on screen as the mischievous Tyrion Lannister, he’s not actually eating meat. For the purposes of the show, his meaty dishes are swapped out with tofu. The prop team is responsible for making it look as realistic as possible, but it’s all plant-based.
That’s because Dinklage is a vegan! For quite a few years, he was a vegetarian, but he eventually cut out those last few animal by-products and went full on vegan. Obviously, it’s working for him — he manages to find the energy to keep up with the show’s grueling schedule and still be a total charmer during talk show appearances.
Singers often have to be careful with what they consume, lest their diet affect their vocal cords. There are many singers who cut out dairy simply because they find that it impacts them in a negative way — and Ariana Grande is one of them.
Although, Grande has cut out more than just dairy. After being a vegetarian for quite a while, she announced back in 2013 that she was switching to a fully vegan diet. Part of it was for health reasons, and because of the way she felt when eating a plant-based diet. However, a large part of it was also her love of animals. She’s stuck to it through the years, and it obviously works for her.
Looking at Liam Hemsworth, you’d likely assume that he was a steak and potatoes kind of guy. Perhaps, given that he was raised in Australia, the kind of guy who consumed a lot of seafood. However, it turns out, Hemsworth is all about plant-based eating.
Part of the reason is that his wife, Miley Cyrus, is a huge animal lover and a vegan herself. It’s a lot easier to make the switch when your partner eats the same way. And, another reason is the people he hung around with — as he told Men’s Fitness, “I have a lot of friends who are vegan. Woody Harrelson was actually one of the original reasons I became vegan because he’s been vegan for, I don’t know, 30 years or something. So, with the facts I was gathering, and then just how I was physically feeling, I felt like I had to do something different.” We never would have guessed!
Many people recognize Mayim Bialik from her childhood role in Blossom, or her more recent role as Dr. Amy Farrah-Fowler in the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory. However, foodies will recognize her for another reason entirely — her passion for vegan cooking.
Bialik is perhaps one of Hollywood’s most outspoken vegans. She’s been a vegan for quite a few years, and even took her knowledge and wrote a cookbook, Mayim’s Vegan Table. She’s totally passionate about plant-based eating.
Now that the show she’s been on for quite a few years is wrapping up, we wouldn’t be surprised if she stepped away from Hollywood to pursue other endeavors. Perhaps she’ll open up her very own vegan restaurant!
Woody Harrelson doesn’t talk all that much about the fact that he’s vegan because it’s such old news. It’s not a switch he made recently and brought up in a ton of interviews. He’s been vegan for so long that it’s just kind of part of who he is.
Harrelson chatted with Metro UK about his eating habits in his younger days, saying that “I used to eat burgers and steak but I would just feel knocked out afterward; I had to give them up. Dairy was first, though.” He cut out animal products and animal by-products and made the switch to veganism when he was 24 years old. He’s been rocking a plant-based lifestyle ever since.
It just goes to show that not all vegan celebrities are super preachy about their way of eating. Some simply eat that way because that’s how they feel best.
While she’s appeared in a few indie projects over the years, most people will recognize actress Evanna Lynch from her role in the Harry Potter franchise. She played the lovable — and a little bit loony — Luna Lovegood. However, there was one thing she was never tucking into during those feasts in the Great Hall — meat.
Lynch has been a vegan for several years and has been outspoken about the fact that she doesn’t feel eating animals is right. We have to admit, we wouldn’t be all that surprised if her character, Luna, was a vegan as well — they both just seem so caring and full of life.
Jenna Dewan has a bit of a unique perspective when it comes to nutrition. Now, she works primarily as an actress. However, she got her start as a dancer, which is an entirely different ball game. Yes, actresses need to fuel their bodies and look a certain way, but dancers have to get really specific about their nutrition. After all, it’s not easy to rehearse choreography for hours on end, or have the energy to perform a full show!
Dewan has been a vegan for several years and is passionate about how it makes her feel. She loves incorporating a ton of vegetables into her day and consuming green smoothies to give herself an energy boost.
Many people have joked about the fact that Jared Leto never ages and, well, it’s kind of true. The man got his start in the entertainment industry decades ago and still looks about the same age as when he was starting out.
Some of that is obviously genetics, but a huge part of it is the lifestyle. It turns out, Leto has been a vegan for over two decades now and is a total advocate for plant-based eating. In fact, he’s mentioned before in interviews that his plant-based diet is a huge reason he’s so healthy and has a younger appearance than many others his age.
Ellen Pompeo has had an interesting journey in Hollywood. For years, she was just another struggling actress trying to get her big break. Then, she hit it big, snagging the leading role as Dr. Meredith Grey in the hit drama Grey’s Anatomy. She’s been on the show for over a decade now, playing the character and logging in long hours on set for season after season.
With a schedule like that, things like exercise and proper nutrition are key. After all, you don’t want to be feeling sluggish when it’s time to film a pivotal scene!
While she’s always been a healthy eater, her veganism is a recent change. She and her family switched to a vegan diet after reading a book on the subject, and she’s been honest about the fact that it’s just a lot easier, in addition to having health benefits.
As she told People, “I don’t think it’s tricky at all — it’s actually easier because meat you have to cook it before it goes bad. Grains and lentils and rice and beans, everything’s in the pantry already.” So true!
Zac Efron seems like the type of guy who would consume huge steaks or mounds of chicken breast alongside his vegetables. After all, he’s in incredible shape — obviously he’s meeting his protein requirements! However, it turns out, he’s meeting them with plant-based proteins.
He hasn’t been a vegan for as long as many others on the list, but he’s passionate about the switch he recently made. He spilled about his diet to Teen Vogue, saying that veganism “completely changed the way that my body works and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It’s been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.” Hey, whatever works!
Natalie Portman has always been outspoken about her diet and has been a vegetarian for most of her life. She made the switch when she was just a child and never looked back. Recently, she upped the ante by switching to an entirely vegan diet — and couldn’t be happier.
She’s been open and honest about the challenges of a vegan diet. In an interview, she told Harper’s Bazaar that she gets B12 shots once a month in order to combat any deficiencies in that regard, as it’s tough to get adequate B12 on a vegan diet. However, she seems to truly love her plant-based way of eating, and we don’t envision her switching back any time soon.
Fans around the world fell head over heels in love with Mellie Grant on Scandal, played by the incredible Bellamy Young. Sure, Mellie was a character who was controversial at times, but Young brought such an amazing energy to the character that you couldn’t help but want to see her on screen.
When Mellie had a food-centric storyline where she was drowning her grief in fried chicken, though, it wasn’t actually chicken that Young was chowing down on. It was vegan fried chicken, prepared for the star in order to satisfy her plant-based needs.
Young has been outspoken about her love for plant-based eating and even shared the incident that prompted her to make the switch. Back when she was in college, she told YouBeauty, “I got the baked breast of chicken, and they sort of plated it weird. As I lowered it down to my tray, it looked exactly like my mom’s little furry yippy dog when she’d roll over and want you to rub her tummy. That was it for me.”
She’s been a vegan ever since — nearly 30 years now!
Alicia Silverstone is another one of those celebrities who is super outspoken about her beliefs. When she started her plant-based style of eating, it was because of her love of animals and belief in animal rights. She just didn’t feel okay about eating any animal products or byproducts anymore.
However, one of the reasons she’s managed to sustain her way of eating is simply because of the way it makes her feel. As she told Food & Wine, “I ditched my asthma inhaler, stopped my weekly allergy shots, lost weight, and had a new glow from my skin and hair… this way of eating transformed me.”
