As a generation with many divorced parents and more and more of us opting not to get married, family has taken on a new meaning. Many are finding that often, friendships are the relationships that last forever, rather than romantic ones. Perhaps this is why so many of us have started to place more emphasis on finding our squad. This situation is no different for celebrities. While some celebrities basically think of their best friends as life partners, others still get married, but not to anyone that doesn’t get along with their best friend.
We’ve compiled a list of our favorite celebrity best friends. On their own, these public figures are powerful, wealthy, and influential. But often, they are much more together; they become comedic and musical duos, political activists, and generally inspiring human beings. Just as a great romantic relationship can lift any of us up, it’s evident that great friendships can do the same. Whether you’re currently looking for your squad, or you’ve already found them, you can certainly enjoy this inspiring list of some of this generation’s best friendships.
Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart’s friendship is arguably one of the most interesting to watch in Hollywood. They’ve certainly capitalized on it with their show “Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party,” but don’t be fooled, this friendship is not just for show. Insider reports the two initially met when Snoop Dogg was a guest on Martha’s talk show, and they bonded while making mashed potatoes. The two actually hang out when they’re not shooting their Emmy nominated show, and as curious as we are about what they talk about, their chemistry suggests that their hangouts are probably much more normal than we’d expect.
Jennifer Aniston And Courteney Cox
Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston probably have one of the most famous friendships in Hollywood. Both successful actresses in their own right, part of the interest in their friendship probably comes from the fact that they both got their big break on a show called Friends. In reality, the main cast of friends all seem to be on good terms still, but none quite as close as these two. Only a few years ago, Courteney served as Jennifer’s maid of honor when she married Justin Theroux, but the two have also been there for each other through hard times. Courteney has commended Jennifer for her support while she went through her divorce. Jennifer also admitted to People; “I’ve slept in her guest room a lot.”
Emma Stone and JLaw
As actresses that have both accomplished a great deal and received a lot of recognition at such a young age, it makes sense that Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence would find some common ground. The unifying thread in their friendship, however, seems to be their sense of humor rather than their success. Last year Jennifer conducted an interview with Emma – whom she calls Emily – for Elle, and we learned a lot of interesting information about their friendship. Apparently, they never talk about acting, Jen thinks Emma is laid-back and adventurous, and Emma thinks of Jen as one of her “most loyal friends.” Also, Jen’s dad made jam for Emily so we suppose these two can’t really get much closer.
Oprah And Gayle
Oprah and Gayle have been friends for more than forty years. At this point, they’re more closely associated than a lot of Hollywood’s married couples. In fact, for as long as these two have been in the public eye together, they’ve been plagued with rumors that they’re in a secret romantic relationship. Oprah even spoke about this in an interview for her magazine, saying she understands why people always think they’re a couple; “how can you be this close without it being sexual? How else can you explain a level of intimacy where someone always loves you, always respects you, admires you?” Well, apparently it is possible, Oprah and Gayle have it, and we just want the same for ourselves. Here’s to hoping!
Meghan Markle And Serena Williams
They’re both heavily scrutinized and accomplished women. Serena Williams and Meghan Markle’s friendship seems to have a lot to do with timing. The two initially met in 2010 at a Superbowl party, but since Meghan’s marriage to Prince Harry and her move to the UK, their friendship seems to have actually gotten stronger. Meghan apparently sought Serena’s advice when she first started dating Harry and had to deal with a new level of public attention. Serena has said that they’ve started to rely on each other even more in recent times with both of them dealing with heightened media attention, racism, and becoming moms. Meghan may not speak about their friendship publicly, but she’s shown her support for Serena by attending her matches, and even wearing clothes from her fashion line.
JLo and Leah Remini
In a testament to the fact that friendships often outlast romantic relationships, Leah Remini and J. Lo were actually introduced by the latter’s ex-husband, Marc Anthony in 2004. Apparently, there was instant chemistry between the two. Leah lamented to Oprah magazine that she was disappointed to find that J. Lo was just as beautiful in real life, and J. Lo says; “We fell in love. It was one of those instant chemistry things where you just feel like, ‘I love this person. I love being around this person. This person makes me laugh… we also have very similar upbringings.” Last year, these two released their first project together; a film called Second Act, which also stars Vanessa Hudgens.
Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams
After playing sisters on the hit show Game Of Thrones, these two became even closer in real life. Sophie and Maisie even have a ship name, Mophie, which obviously takes their friendship to another level. Sophie has had quite a long engagement to her fiance Joe Jonas (they’re expected to get married this year) but she asked Maisie to be one of her bridesmaids very early on in the process. Recently, these two got matching tattoos to commemorate the day they learned they were going to be part of GOT. While getting tattoos with friends and romantic partners is often frowned upon, we can understand why these two why would want to remember the date their lives changed. Hopefully, they become this generations Jennifer and Courteney!
Beyonce and Kelly Rowland
Will people ever get tired of Destiny’s Child? We’d say it’s probably not possible. Beyonce and Kelly were introduced to the world as members of one of the most successful girl groups of all time, but some may not know just how far their history extends. In addition to having known each other since they were teenagers, Kelly actually lived with the Knowles family for some time. Kelly is close with Beyonce’s mother and sister Solange as well. Kelly calls Beyonce’s mom her “second mother,” and she even walked her down the aisle because her own mom was two sick, Ebony reported. There have even been rumors that Kelly is secretly Beyonce’s sister (who comes up with this stuff?!) and though they may not be related by blood, these two are definitely family.
Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips
These two have been friends for decades, and they’ve gone through a great deal of heartache together. It’s the kind of friendship you know is bound to last a lifetime. Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips met when they starred on the show Dawson’s Creek together, which Busy joined in the fifth season. Busy describes their meeting as love at first sight, which honestly makes their love story better than any post-2000s romcom. Check out Michelle’s beautiful confession about their friendship; “My memory of being with her then doesn’t have anything to do with the show or working, but it was on our time off. It was talking on the porch all night long and it was back when bread was still okay to eat … That’s what I remember: an endless conversation over multiple bread baskets.” Honestly, sounds perfect!
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Norman Reedus
When Jeffrey Dean Morgan joined the cast of “The Walking Dead” in its sixth season, he got a new job and a new friend. These two apparently spend a lot of time together off-set, as Jeffrey told ABC; “Not only do we live next to each other in Georgia, but we both have this big affinity toward motorcycles, and we spend a lot of time on the roads. It’s kind of a great way to unwind and we have that in common. So I talk to him daily.” The entire cast of “The Walking Dead” seems to be pretty close, but we live for this bromance.
Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union
Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union’s friendship has been strengthened recently by the fact that they are working together on the female-powered Bad Boys spin-off L.A .’s Finest. Gabrielle recently had a baby girl via surrogate, and she admitted to Us Weekly that she couldn’t remember whether she called Jessica or her husband first. She added that Jessica helped her through her initial panic, and later on hooked her up with endless baby supplies from her hugely successful business, The Honest Company. Gabrielle even uses Jessica’s old nanny. She said this about her costar and friend; “When I say I lean of her, it’s kind of for a lot of things.” We think these two are definitely newly-minted BFF goals.
Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz
Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz hit it off after starting in Charlie’s Angels together (still waiting on that next installment). The two have been friends ever since, so it’s been almost twenty years at this point. Drew was in attendance at Cameron’s super intimate wedding to Benji Madden, in which she also served as a bridesmaid. Drew has shared pictures of the two hanging out on social media for fans, including one with the touching caption; “Getting out of your house with your girlfriend. And being a whole person, with your sister. Remember to spend a moment with the ones you love in your busy life. She has made me feel beyond beautiful. Always has. Always will.”
Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale
Vanessa and Ashley both got their big break through the hugely successful High School Musical franchise. They practically grew up together, but we still find it inspiring that they’ve maintained a friendship for so long. These two are so close that Vanessa was even a bridesmaid at Ashley’s wedding. The two occasionally collaborate as well; their duet version of Elle King’s Ex’s & Oh’s on Ashley’s Youtube channel has more than 33 million views. It’s pretty clear Vanessa and Ashley’s fans still love seeing the two together, and we certainly hope to see them work together on the big screen one day, like many of the best friends on this list.
Amber Tamblyn and America Ferrera
It’s been a while, but you probably remember that these two starred in Sisterhood Of the Traveling Pants together all those years ago. Honestly, the entire squad (including Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel) are all a pretty tight-knit and supportive group. Though it’s rare for all of them to be seen together, they do seem to make an effort when it counts (all the “sisters” attended America and Amber’s weddings). Amber and America recently teamed up on an episode of lip-synch battle together and they also met up for the Women’s March in Washington D.C. The women seem to be bonded by their passion for politics and women’s rights, which we’d say is pretty goals worthy.
Zach Braff and Donald Faison
This list may consist mostly of starlets, but we’d argue that some of Hollywood’s best bromances don’t get the attention they deserve. Everyone likes to talk about Matt and Ben, but what about Zach and Donald? These two hit it off as costars on Scrubs, and their friendship has outlasted their time as coworkers. Zach and Donald are truly fond of each other. To start with, Donald got married in Zach’s backyard (Zach was also his best man), but the cherry-on-top is that these two often have date nights together. Neither of the two is shy about expressing their love for one another, and we can’t help but find that inspiring.
Kristen Wiig And Maya Rudolph
Their friendship was first made famous by the film Bridesmaids, but Kristen and Maya actually met a decade before the film. Interestingly enough, they met at a wedding shower hosted by Melissa McCarthy. Apparently, the wedding shower was also the first place Kristen met Melissa as well as Wendi McLendon-Covey, who is also in the film. Talk about art imitating life! Maya and Kristen have also worked together on SNL, where their comedic chemistry was goals-worthy. Hopefully, we’ll get to see them together in a Bridesmaids sequel someday.
Sarah Paulson and Amanda Peet
Like many other BFFs on this list, these two met at work. Sarah and Amanda starred on the sitcom “Jack & Jill” together, and apparently, they had instant chemistry. Amanda told Elle; “Within five minutes of meeting each other, we had our first laughing fit.” Later, the two worked together again on “Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip.” These best friends live within four minutes of each other and have a shared pet name (it’s “bird”). Amanda already has a husband, but she says that Sarah is “like [her] wife.” How lucky are these two?!
Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek
They often get mistaken for each other despite being from different continents, but Salma and Penelope’s closeness does make it harder to distinguish between the two. In addition to the constant support for each other’s work, Salma and Penelope also have a nickname for each other (Huevos). Also, this story Penelope told The Guardian is everything; “When I was nine years old I used to spend a couple of hours a day washing and cutting hair at my parents’ salon and still, today, I’ll do everyone who lets me – like Salma…I’ve done her hair when the power went out in her house, with just a candle. That one really trusts me.” Yeah, that sounds like the ultimate trust fall.
Julia Roberts and George Clooney
When you find your people, it doesn’t make a difference whether you’ve known each other for ten years or ten minutes. Julia Roberts and George Clooney are the perfect examples of that. The two met on Ocean’s Eleven, but apparently, people thought they’d been friends for years before that. Since that initial meeting, the two have worked together multiple times, including on the sequel to the Ocean’s film, as well as the film Money Monster. Julia spoke about her friendship with George to People and said; “[we] just stitched our lives closer together. All these people that come into our lives — my husband, my children, his wife [Amal Clooney] — we just keep stitching our lives closer together.”
Eva Longoria and Mario Lopez
Not everyone knows about Eva Longoria and Mario Lopez’s friendship, but they’ve actually been close for a long time (as proven by this throwback photo). The two have known each other for more than a decade and Eva is actually the godmother to Mario’s daughter Gia according to Popsugar. Eva has said previously that Mario is like her “brother.” She’s often made appearances on Extra and been interviewed by Mario, and sometimes they even post pictures with each other’s kids. We imagine their little ones will grow up to be close too!
